When I served my 4 years (72-76) and the received 4- years college benefit – it was not free. I earned it. In 1972 an E1 earned $186 a month! They had my ass 24/7, and I did more 16 hour shifts than I can count.
I do understand the point made, but GIs didn’t get “Free College”. They signed a contract giving everything up to and including their life if required to earn it and a chickenshit paycheck – and in the early 70s – for an ungrateful country.
