The poem below was written by Pastor Martin Niemoller was German Theologian during World War. Germany had become a Police State, with all who spoke out against the Reich arrested. It started with the leaders of opposing parties, then college Professors, Authors, Preachers, then the race and religion they considered enemies. Indifference and Apathy allowed to get as far as it did. Niemoller himself was imprisoned for 7 years because he spoke out against the Führer.
First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me
